If you ran out of idea of where to go during this coming school break, take a trip to PNB Ilham Resort in Tanjung Tuan (near Port Dickson) to participate in the 2009 Raptor Watch organized by the Malaysian Nature Society. There will be booths and exhibitions, talks and documentaries, as well as outdoor performances and competitions waiting for you at the site. Full program here.

According to the Malaysian Nature Society, the organizer of Raptor Watch 2009, raptors are birds that hunt for food. Typical preys are rodents, chickens, fish, reptiles and other birds. As such, they posses extremely good eyesight, sharp claws and flight agility. There are 46 raptor species in Malaysia of which 25 are migratory. The total number of raptor species in the world is 421. Day raptor species outnumber night raptor species by 288 to 133. The two largest raptor species which can be found in Malaysia is the migratory Greater Spotted Eagle and the local White Bellied Sea Eagle.

It is not difficult to get to PNB Ilham Resort. Just follow this instruction from the Raptor Watch 2009 website. Perhaps this is not the kind of trip typical Malaysians would make but surely not one you would regret!

In astronomical term, a planet is said to be in opposition when it reaches the opposite side of the sun with the Earth being at the centre of the planet and the Sun.

On 9 March 2009, Saturn, the sixth planet in and the second largest in our Solar System reached its opposition point. In the next few days, Saturn, as seen in the night sky, will be crossing the meridian (the imaginary line in the sky connecting the north celestial pole and the south celestial pole) roughly at midnight. It will rise during sunset and sets at sunrise. Saturn will appear brighter than usual because it faces the sun directly. The best time to observe an outer planet is undoubtedly when it is in opposition.

To take advantage of this opportunity, Planetarium Negara in Kuala Lumpur is organizing an observation session to capture Saturn in telescope. The observation, which is open to public, will take place on 13 March 2009, between 8.00pm to 10.00pm, at the main entrance of the Planetarium Complex.

Do take this opportunity to get the best view of Saturn. You will have to wait another 378 days before the next opposition happens.
